An outbreak of Acinetobacter baumannii septicemia in a neonatal intensive care unit of a university hospital in Brazil BJID
Brito,Denise von Dolinger de; Oliveira,Elias José; Abdallah,Vânia O. Steffen; Darini,Ana Lúcia da Costa; Gontijo Filho,Paulo P..
We studied an outbreak of two multi-drug resistant clones of Acinetobacter baumannii in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Uberlândia Federal University Hospital in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, and we analyzed the contribution of cross-transmission in the rise in infection rates. Eleven neonates who developed multi-drug resistant A. baumannii nosocomial infection were matched to 22 neonates who were admitted to the same unit and did not develop an infection during the outbreak period, in order to identify risk factors for infection. Three out of the 11 neonates died. Epidemiological investigation included molecular typing, using pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Prior to the outbreak, from December 2001 to March 2002, no case of infection by this...

An outbreak of acute bovine mastitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae in a dairy herd Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,N.; Costa,G.M..
An outbreak of coliform mastitis is described in a dairy herd from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During a four-month period 14 fatal cases of Klebsiella pneumoniae-related mastitis were observed in a herd of 104 lactating cows. The symptoms included peracute enterotoxemia in which the cows died 6 to 12 h after the detection of mastitis by CMT. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae Streptococcus agalactiae were also isolated although could not be associated with cases of acute fatal mastitis. Milking practices were also evaluated. The milking machine was being used correctly and adequate precautions for hygiene and pre-milking and post-milking teat dipping were used. The organism was sensitive to gentamicin. Therapy for acute toxic...

Torres,Rosângela Stadnick Lauth de Almeida; Paula,Cristiane Coimbra de; Pilonetto,Marcelo; Fontana,Christine Krawiec; Minozzo,João Carlos; Torres,Rafael de Almeida.
The beta-hemolytic group C streptococci (Lancefield's group) has been considered an emergent human pathogen, showing an important role as an opportunist agent, being responsible for nosocomial infections and outbreaks. This study is reporting the first outbreak of nosocomial infection caused by Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis in Brazil. From January, 2002, to December, 2004, S. equisimilis was isolated in 67/207 (32.37%) samples from secretions of patients' infected wounds, interned at the Hospital of Sanitary Dermatology in the State of Paraná (HDSPR). The prevalence of this microorganism increased from 11/42 (26.19%) in 2002, 14/65 (21.54%) in 2003 to 42/100 (42.00%) in 2004. This increase was statistically significant (p=0.024), and this...

Association of plasmid typing to biotyping and antibiotyping in the characterization of outbreaks by Acinetobacter baumannii BABT
Tognim,Maria Cristina Bronharo; Gaziri,Luiz Carlos Jabur; Vidotto,Marilda Carlos; Perugini,Marcia Regina.
During an outbreak at an University Hospital, from April to September, in 1994, sixteen strains of Acinetobacter baumannii were isolated from patients and one strain from an enteral solution. We afterwards analyzed the outbreak by means of plasmid typing, antibiotic resistance typing and biotyping. Two main plasmid profiles were identified. Twelve strains belonged to biotype 2, and five to biotype 19. Susceptibility to amikacin and to carbenicillin allowed classification of the strains into two groups. The results show that association of those three typing methods allowed the differentiation of what was at first considered as a single outbreak into two apparently unrelated outbreaks.

First isolation of hirame rhabdovirus from freshwater fish in Europe ArchiMer
Borzym, E.; Matras, M.; Maj-paluch, J.; Baud, M.; De Boisseson, C.; Talbi, Chiraz; Olesen, N. J.; Bigarre, L..
A rhabdovirus was isolated in cell culture inoculated with tissue material from diseased grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.), originating from a fish farm affected by a mortality episode in Poland. Diagnostics tests showed that the virus was not related to novirhabdoviruses known in Europe, nor to vesiculovirus-like species, except perch rhabdovirus (PRhV) with which it shared moderate serological relations. However, RT-PCR with PRhV probes gave negative results. To identify the virus, a random-priming sequence-independent single primer amplification was adopted. Surprisingly, two of the obtained sequences exhibited a high identity (>99%) with hirame rhabdovirus (HIRRV), a novirhabdovirus usually found in fish in marine Asiatic countries, for instance...

Guillois-bécel, Y.; Couturier, E.; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Roque-afonso, A.m.; Le Guyader, Soizick; Le Goas, A.; Pernes, J.; Le Bechec, S.; Briand, A.; Robert, C.; Dussaix, E.; Pommepuy, Monique; Vaillant, C..
Following the notification of nine hepatitis A cases partly clustered near an oyster growing area in the Côtes d’Armor district (Brittany, France), epidemiological, environmental and microbiological investigations were performed in order to identify the source and vehicle of contamination and devise control measures. The investigations identified 111 cases, all of whom lived or had stayed in the district. Of these cases, 87% had eaten raw bivalve molluscs and 81% had specifically eaten oysters. The raw molluscs originated from a single shellfish farm located at the north of Paimpol bay. The shellfish were probably contaminated while being stored in submersible tanks or purified in a land-based tank. They were tainted either by sewage overflows or releases...

Outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in Africa: the beginnings of a tragic saga J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Chippaux,Jean-Philippe.
The tremendous outbreak of Ebola virus disease occurring in West Africa since the end of 2013 surprises by its remoteness from previous epidemics and dramatic extent. This review aims to describe the 27 manifestations of Ebola virus that arose after its discovery in 1976. It provides an update on research on the ecology of Ebola viruses, modes of contamination and human transmission of the disease that are mainly linked to close contact with an infected animal or a patient suffering from the disease. The recommendations to contain the epidemic and challenges to achieve it are reminded.

Polyclonal outbreak of bacteremia caused by Burkholderia cepacia complex and the presumptive role of ultrasound gel BJID
Nannini,Esteban C.; Ponessa,Adriana; Muratori,Rosa; Marchiaro,Patricia; Ballerini,Viviana; Flynn,Luis; Limansky,Adriana S..
ABSTRACTA nosocomial polyclonal outbreak associated to bacteremia caused by differentBurkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) species and clones is reported. Molecular characterization identified Burkholderia stabilis, Burkholderia contaminans, and Burkholderia ambifaria among BCC isolates obtained from patients in neonatal and adult intensive care units. BCC was also isolated from an intrinsically contaminated ultrasound gel, which constituted the presumptive BCC source. Prior BCC outbreak related to contaminated ultrasound gels have been described in the setting of transrectal prostate biopsy. Outbreak caused strains and/or clones of BCC have been reported, probably because BCC are commonly found in the natural environment; most BCC species are biofilm...

Recovery probabilities of coral reef communities after Acanthaster planci infestation: a case study at Shabror umm gam'ar, Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt OceanDocs
Ammar, M.S.A..
Recovery patterns of coral reef benthic communities were estimated by linear extrapolation after Acanthaster planci outbreak of 1998 at Shabror Umm Gam'ar, Hurghada of the Egyptian Red Sea. The significance of using linear extrapolation was tested in a range of ten sites by comparison with the actual average yearly recovery rates. A total of 15 permanent transects, each is 10m long, were monitored at 10m and 12m depths in both Shabror Umm Gam’ar and the ten selected sites. The recovery rate estimated by linear extrapolation did not significantly differ from the recovery rate of stony corals in the ten selected sites. Moreover, an error of +7.69% to +17.5% increase in the extrapolated recovery rate exists and should be considered while handling the...
